9th World Water Forum

World Water Forum 2022 - Dakar - 25/03/2022

At the 9th World Water Forum, the WASH Road Map presented a joint session with the ICRC and the LSHTM. Entitled ''Joining forces to prevent the reversal of the SDGs' in Fragile, Conflict, and Violence affected settings’’, it had two objectives:
  • To highlight the benefits of innovative partnerships for protecting, maintaining and/or strengthening water and sanitation services during crises with concrete examples of successful actions.
  • To encourage a dialogue between the public and a representative sample of the diversity of actors present in crises contexts.

Agenda

1. The session was introduced by a panel composed of:
  • Ramesh Rajasingham (Director Coordination Division, OCHA)
  • Kelly Ann Naylor (WASH Director, UNICEF)
  • Gilles Carbonnier (Vice President, ICRC)
  • Christian Frutiger (Secretary of State, SDC)
  • Jennifer Sara (Global Director of the WB Group’s Water Global Practices, World Bank)

2. Examples of successful actions were then presented by:
  • Claudio Deola (Save the Children UK) who introduced the WASH Road Map
  • Lauren D’Mello Guyett (LSHTM) who presented the WASH sector Gap Analysis and Research Agenda
  • Dominick de Waal (WB) & Guillaume Pierrehumbert (ICRC) who shared the main takeaways from the report ‘’Joining forces to secure water and sanitation in protracted crises’’

3. Finally, the second multi-stakeholder panel discussed the practical local ways to further support the WASH sector:
  • Ousmane Pitroipa (Chief Operating Officer of ONEA, Burkina Faso) - National water provider
  • Yacouba Konate (Head of LEHSA, 2iE Insitute, Burkina Faso) - University
  • Lama Youssef (Architect & WASH coordinator SARC, Syrie) - Local Humanitarian Organization
  • Odilon Changotadé (General Manager of Burex -3eA, Burkina Faso) - private sector
  •  Martina Rama (WASH Cluster Coordinator, Burkina Faso) - National WASH Coordination Platform

Overall, the session was a strong call to give the WASH sector the tools to do better in fragile and violence settings. It was also a great platform for the visibility of the Road Map and its messages, especially ahead of the UN 2023 Water Conference coming up in March 2023.
