initiative 8: Humanitarian WASH ADVOCACY and funding
supporting the construction and facilitation of awash advocacy community

The Humanitarian WASH sector faces significant challenges, including underfunding and deprioritization compared to other major sectors. Despite its critical importance, it often remains overshadowed, hindering its ability to address urgent needs effectively.

The Humanitarian Wash Advocacy and Funding initiative aims to tackle these challenges head-on by developing a consultative and integrated approach to establish an inclusive global advocacy strategy for the Humanitarian WASH sector. By identifying gaps, priorities, and trends at various levels – global, regional, national, and local – we will equip local and national WASH partners and coordination platforms to become more effective advocates for the cause.

Key Objectives:
  • Establishing a Comprehensive Advocacy Strategy: We will work collaboratively with key stakeholders, including the Core Technical Agency (CTA) and the WASH Advocacy Alliance (WAA), to develop a robust advocacy strategy. This strategy will encompass marketing and communication campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the critical issues facing the Humanitarian WASH sector.
  • Addressing Underfunding: The Humanitarian WASH sector is currently underfunded and deprioritized compared to other sectors. Our initiative seeks to change this status quo by advocating at the global level for increased financial resources for Humanitarian WASH projects. We will produce recommendations to maximize the effectiveness and coverage of existing funds and financial mechanisms. Additionally, we will explore the feasibility of launching an additional Humanitarian WASH fund, open to both conventional and non-conventional donors, including the private sector and private foundations.

Expected Impact:
  • Increased Visibility: By advocating for the Humanitarian WASH sector on global and national agendas, we aim to elevate its visibility and ensure it receives the attention it deserves in humanitarian responses.
  • Enhanced Funding: Through targeted advocacy efforts and the establishment of new funding mechanisms, we aspire to secure greater financial resources for Humanitarian WASH projects, ultimately improving their effectiveness and reach.

Join Us in Making a Difference: Together, we can transform challenges into opportunities and ensure that the Humanitarian WASH sector receives the support and recognition it needs to save lives and build resilient communities.

Strategic Advocacy & Funding Efforts

To ensure sustainable and non-traditional funding for the WASH sector, we have leveraged expert consultancies to guide our advocacy strategies:
✅ Global Health Vision (2022): Identifying high-impact advocacy approaches.
✅ Oxfam Consult (2023): Strengthening our engagement tactics for lasting change.
✅ Elisa Dehove Consultancy (2024): Refining strategic priorities for more durable funding solutions.
As we continue to grow this movement, we remain committed to building strong partnerships, influencing policy, and securing the financial resources needed to drive lasting impact in the WASH sector.

Our Achievements

200+ CALL TO ACTION SIGNATORIES

One of the most significant milestones of our initiative has been the ability to mobilize over 200 actors worldwide, spanning various sectors, expertise levels, and regions, through the Call to Action (CTA) and its five key claims. In less than two years, the CTA has reached policymakers, organizations, and individuals both within and beyond the WASH sector—bringing attention to the urgent need for action. This movement has even engaged four State actors, with the potential for deeper collaboration in the future.

UN Water Envoy Appointed!

We are excited to share a significant achievement for Initiative 8 and the entire WASH community. As part of our ongoing Call to Action (CTA), we are delighted to announce that one of the five CTA messages has been successfully realized—a UN Water Envoy has been appointed!
This is a testament to the collective effort of all our partners, supporters, and stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to make this a reality. However, our work doesn’t stop here. There are still four remaining CTA messages that we must continue to push for.
Our mission remains clear: to secure more signatures from organizations, governments, and other influential bodies to ensure that the remaining objectives are met. Together, we will continue to advocate for change and ensure that water, sanitation, and hygiene are prioritized on the global stage.
