On 26 August 2025, during World Water Week in Stockholm, an alliance of national governments, UN agencies, networks, and NGOs co-hosted a dedicated session on enhancing climate-resilient WASH in humanitarian settings.
The event underscored the urgent need for collaborative action in Fragile, Conflict and Violent (FCV) settings, drawing from the experience of the WASH Road Map alliance of 45 organisations. Discussions highlighted four strategic areas of the Road Map – knowledge, integration, the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, and advocacy and funding – brought to life by a field testimony from Lebanon on how to sustain WASH services in conflict situations.
High-level contributions were made by the Sherpas of the UN 2026 Water Conference – Dr. Mohamed Diatta (Senegal) and Ms. Shaima Gargash (UAE) – as well as Ms. Tanja Miškova (Slovenia) and Mr. Pedro Arrojo-Agudo (UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights to water and sanitation). The session was facilitated by Dr. Jean Lapègue (ACF) and opened by Mr. Henk Ovink (Global Commission on the Economics of Water), who linked humanitarian WASH systems to preparations for the UN 2026 Water Conference, the Humanitarian Reset, and COP 30 in Brazil.
This session highlighted the growing challenges of longer, more complex, and underfunded humanitarian crises – with over 173 million people in urgent need of humanitarian WASH support. It reinforced the call for greater advocacy, stronger financing, and innovative approaches to ensure that water and sanitation remain protected as fundamental human rights in times of crisis.

FRANCE SIGNS THE CALL TO ACTION!At the One Water Summit in Riyadh, a groundbreaking milestone was achieved as French President Emmanuel Macron officially endorsed the WASH Roadmap Call to Action. This pivotal moment highlights France's commitment to addressing water, sanitation, and hygiene challenges in humanitarian contexts, including the appointment of a Special Envoy on Water. ONE CALL TO ACTION ACHIEVED! FOUR MORE TOGO!!
We are thrilled to announce that one of the five Call to Action points has been achieved: the nomination of a UN Special Envoy for Water. This is a major milestone in our collective efforts to address global water issues and ensure progress toward SDG 6.
Our work doesn’t stop here. We continue to advocate for the remaining four Call to Action points, including prioritizing vulnerable populations, strengthening humanitarian WASH responses, building resilient WASH systems, and promoting the protection of WASH personnel in conflict zones.
Together, we can create lasting change!
