WASH ROADMAP CALL TO ACTION 2.0
In 2024, over 176 million people required humanitarian WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) aid — yet only 48 million received assistance. The WASH sector received just 37% of its required funding. This dramatic shortfall signals a growing crisis in humanitarian financing and raises urgent concerns about the global commitment to uphold the human right to safe water and sanitation.
The consequences of inaction are grave. In fragile, conflict- and violence-affected (FCV) settings, poor access to WASH exacerbates disease, displacement, and instability. Over 80% of illnesses in crisis settings stem from unsafe water and inadequate sanitation.
To respond, humanitarian actors came together in 2020 to form the WASH RoadMap, uniting efforts under eight key initiatives. In 2023, the WASH RoadMap launched its first global Call to Action (CTA), endorsed by more than 200 organizations and four countries (France, Switzerland, Chad, and Slovenia). The 2025 CTA builds on that momentum, updating our shared priorities to reflect today’s humanitarian challenges and opportunities.
